I have been photographing my sibling Emily since the day I picked up a camera. They have been my most constant muse. I have watched their steady gaze through my lens change as they grew up and slowly became more and more aware of themselves and their own image. I began taking a photo of Emily every year around their birthday, starting in 2005 when they turned 15. Emily is now 32 years old. In 2013 they brought their girlfriend Sarah home with them and I decided to include her in the photo for that year, and every year since. In 2022 they came out as nonbinary. As each year passes, I remember all of the portraits that came before, the young person of 15 all the way to the adult they have become now, more sure of themself and comfortable in their own body. This series changes slowly over time as each year we make another portrait together creating a narrative that is open ended, looking into a future that is unknown.
